Trend Watch: Creating Outdoor Havens and Getaway Vibes

I gathered the latest search insights from the Houzz community of U.S. homeowners and home professionals to identify top design trends during the coronavirus pandemic. The results reflect a desire to take advantage of outdoor spaces and a longing to transport themselves to a cozy getaway.

The Great Backyard

There’s no better place to enjoy the fresh air than right in your backyard. Outdoor searches on Houzz have doubled, with spikes in searches for above-ground pools, outdoor chairs, outdoor pillows, hammocks, fire pits, and porch swings.

People are also seeking shade, with searches for covered patios, outdoor umbrellas, gazebos, and pergolas all up (109%, 83%, 47%, and 38%, respectively).

The Ultimate Stay-cation

We’re seeing that people are using design to bring the vacation home or decorate second homes. Searches for getaway-style designs, like cabins and lake houses, have seen substantial increases from the same period last year.

Trending Materials and Colors

Trending materials include batten and board siding, corrugated metal roofs, wicker, and wrought iron railings. Among colors, burgundy, white and navy blue were the most popular (up 167%, 91%, and 55%, respectively).

Homeowners who are looking to begin renovating or decorating their homes can find the best home professionals for their projects on Houzz. To move projects forward safely during the pandemic, homeowners and pros can rely on digital tools like those that Houzz Pro offers to communicate, share ideas, pay invoices, and host video meetings.

Among homeowners who used or are using these tools with their pros for projects during the pandemic, two-thirds say it made them more comfortable moving their project forward (65%).

On-site safety measures have also changed, as homeowners and pros follow new rigorous standards during the construction and installation phases to make sure everyone stays safe.
